Weekend & Family Programs

Our weekend adventure programs have children and adults exploring the trails of our Sanctuary. The weather changes rapidly depending on the fog and there is always a chance to encounter dirt and water, so please dress appropriately. Closed toe, walking shoes are highly recommended! Also, each program incorporates a 15 minute snack break. Please bring a waste-free snack and reusable water bottle with you to enjoy during this break.

Restoration Work Day
Saturday, January 16th, 9am-12pm
Bring your family and friends for a morning of restoration and clean-up at the Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary. We may be removing trash, invasive plants, or helping with restoration projects. Appropriate for young children. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring a re-useable water bottle, wear appropriate clothing and close-toe shoes. FREE program. RSVP: 388-2524.
Life in a Pond
Saturday, January 23rd, 10am-12pm
When it rains, seasonal ponds suddenly come to life and become a valuable resource for local wildlife. Bring your sense of adventure and wear clothes and shoes that can get muddy/wet, and we’ll explore the micro to macro inhabitants of our seasonal pond. Appropriate for children ages 5-8. Children ages 4 and under may participate, but must be accompanied by an adult.

A Tree is Nice
Saturday, February 13th, 10am-12pm
Join us for a fun exploration all about our Sanctuary’s native trees! We’ll learn tree parts, how trees grow, explore different textures and shapes of bark, leaves and branches, and delve into how different trees help create different kinds of habitats. Appropriate for children ages 5-8. Children ages 4 and under may participate, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Animal Tracks and Signs
Saturday, February 27th, 10am-12pm
Bobcat or housecat - curious about what track you found in your backyard the other day? Come learn to identify tracks and signs and about the animals that left them. Appropriate for children ages 5-8. Children ages 4 and under may participate, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Journaling Birds & Wildlife with Jack Laws
Saturday, March 13th, 10am-12pm
Join naturalist, educator and artist John (Jack) Muir Laws for this 2 hour program that will inspire you to head outdoors with sketchbook and pencils in hand. Participants ages 9 and up will be introduced to the basic technique and tools to help you draw birds and other wildlife.

Nests & Eggs
Saturday, March 27th, 9am – 10pm
Explore the life cycles of our amazing birds! Marin provides home to a broad diversity of birds, each having a unique way of building nests and caring for their young. We’ll discover the remarkable nests and colorful variety of eggs created by local and exotic birds. Appropriate for children ages 5-8. Children ages 4 and under may participate, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Native Plant Sale
Saturday, April 10th 9am – 12pm
This annual plant sale (sponsored by the Marin Chapter of the California Native Plant Society) features a great selection of California plants, all with the stamp of approval from the birds and the pollinators. There will also be books and posters for sale, and plant experts on hand to answer questions.
Amazing Pollinators!
Saturday, April 10th, 10am – 12pm
Find out why native bees and butterflies are important to our gardens, our ecosystems, and our planet! We’ll discover bees, butterflies, and other pollinators at the sanctuary and the beautiful wildflowers popping up all around our hills. Appropriate for children ages 5-8. Children ages 4 and under may participate, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Earth Day Celebration/Restoration Work Day

Worm Bin Workshop
Saturday, April 17th, 11:30am-12:30pm
Learn how to make a worm bin for your home or classroom! Worm bins keep food waste out of landfills and produce wonderful soil for your garden. Appropriate for families or individuals. Cost: $40 (includes bin, info packet, & starter worms). Advance Registration Required: 388-2524.

Welcome Summer Birds
Saturday, May 8th, 8:30–10:30am
Join us for a bird walk led by Kerry Wilcox, our Sanctuary Manager and experienced birder. We will view and learn about the waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds that visit Richardson Bay in the spring and summer. Beginner and advanced birders, and families welcome. Mudflats Exploration
Saturday, May 22nd, 12:30 – 2:30pm
Join us on an exploration of the intertidal areas of the Sanctuary. A Teacher Naturalist will guide us along the shoreline as we discover the inhabitants, and investigate how they cope with the extreme conditions of this unique ecosystem. Appropriate for families with children of all ages. Not a drop off program. Cost: $10 adult / $5 child. RSVP: 388-2524.
